A 47-year-old man arrested in New Jersey last year after spending 17 years evading charges he sexually assaulted five young boys in Canada now faces child pornography charges in the United States, authorities said.
Parthasarthie Kapoor, who had been on Quebec’s 10-most wanted fugitive list since 2003, was arrested in Jan. 21, 2020 at Newark Liberty International Airport as he attempted to fly to India.
U.S. authorities held Kapoor, who is originally from the Bronx, New York, on a provisional arrest warrant at the request of Canadian authorities. When they searched his luggage, they found five cell phones, acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig said Monday.
“A subsequent forensic examination of one of the cellular phones revealed numerous videos of children being sexually abused,” Honig said in a statement.
In a criminal complaint filed Feb. 25, an investigator with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said one of Kapoor’s phones contained at least eight videos of children being sexually assaulted.
Investigators were able to identify one of the child victims in the videos and determined Kapoor’s phone “was associated with two phone numbers that were utilized by (the victim),” according to the complaint.
Kapoor appeared Monday in U.S. District Court via videoconference and was ordered held on the U.S. charges, Honig said. The status of the Canadian charges was not immediately clear on Tuesday morning.
