According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, 10,949 cases of human trafficking were reported in the United States in 2018. According to the hotline, California is one of the largest sites of human trafficking in the United States. In 2018, 1,656 cases of human trafficking were reported in California.

Human trafficking earns global profits of roughly $150 billion a year for traffickers, $99 billion of which comes from commercial sexual exploitation. Globally, an estimated 71% of enslaved people are women and girls, while men and boys account for 29%.

The Department of Justice announced the arrest of 11 alleged MS–13 gang members Wednesday, charged with the sex trafficking of a minor under the age of 14 and/or Violent Crime in Aid of Racketeering (VICAR) assault.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Eleven members or close associates of the MS-13 gang were arrested this week relating to the sexual exploitation and physical abuse of a minor in northern Virginia and Maryland.

“Sex traffickers often prey upon the most vulnerable victims in our society, and when combined with the horrific abuses of a gang like MS-13, the effects can be devastating,” said G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “I have personally handled the prosecution of MS-13 members in northern Virginia for over a decade, including for gang-controlled sex trafficking, and I have led meaningful outreach efforts with the Hispanic community in order to raise public awareness of these serious threats. As I’ve noted before, no one suffers more at the hands of MS-13 than other individuals of Central American birth or ancestry, and cases like this are proof of the need for community leaders to step up, acknowledge this reality, and work together to be part of the solution. I want to thank our law enforcement partners for conducting this complex investigation and arrest operation in a diligent and professional manner, and for their sustained commitment to eradicating MS-13 from our communities. These defendants are charged with heinous offenses, but are appropriately presumed innocent unless or until proven otherwise.”

According to court documents, in Aug. 2018, a 13-year-old identified as MINOR 2 ran away from a youth home in northern Virginia. Shortly after running away, MINOR 2 was introduced to members of MS-13. Members of the gang beat MINOR 2 26 times with a baseball bat as part of a gang initiation. Gang members then sex trafficked MINOR 2 in Virginia and Maryland using the currency of cash and drugs. While in Virginia, men lined up to have sex with her in a wooded area behind one target’s apartment complex. The men gave her drugs in exchange for sex. She also was harbored in various apartments in northern Virginia where men paid her and her handlers cash for sex.

“MS-13 is known for their violence and intimidation, but the horrific crimes alleged in this case show how their cruelty and depravity know no bounds,” said Robert E. Bornstein, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office Criminal Division. “The FBI and our community will not stand by while children are beaten, plied with drugs, and trafficked for sex. We will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to disrupt violent gang activity and bring justice on behalf of the innocent victims on whom they prey.”

According to court documents, MINOR 2 was later beaten again with a bat 26 times. After the second bat beating, MINOR 2 was transported to Maryland, where she was sold to numerous gang members and other customers in exchange for cash. Law enforcement recovered photographs and videos of MINOR 2 while being sexually exploited, along with numerous social media messages regarding the trafficking and sexual exploitation of MINOR 2.

“Today’s arrests are a prime example of the commitment and dedication of local police officers and federal agents to safeguard northern Virginia against crime and violence,” said Edwin C. Roessler Jr., Chief of Fairfax County Police. “The Fairfax County police department will continue to use every resource and leverage the full weight of our agency and our federal partners to prevent violence by interdicting organized crime and holding alleged criminal street gangs accountable.”

 A Mason man is facing human trafficking and sexual assault charges after a girl told police he made her produce child porn, according to court records. 

The girl, who was younger than 16, told officials at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services she had been sexually assaulted by Devin Vasquez, 19, Lansing Police Detective Jason Pung testified in hearing that led to criminal charges. 

The girl told police Vasquez convinced her to take sexually explicit photos and videotape herself, Pung testified. He later had her sell the photos and videos on the internet for money for “their future,” Pung said. 

Public Defender Russell Church, whose office is representing Vasquez, declined to comment. 

When police looked at the teenager’s phone, they found a sexually explicit video of the teen and Vasquez. 

Vasquez is charged with four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, four counts of child sexually abusive activity, four counts of using a computer to commit a crime and one count of human trafficking of a minor for commercial sexual activity. 

First-degree criminal sexual conduct is punishable by up to life in prison.

Ingham County District Court Judge Richard Hillman released Vasquez from the Ingham County Jail on a personal recognizance bond, meaning he will only have to pay if he does not return to court.

Naval Criminal Investigative Service carried out a mass arrest of 16 Marines Thursday morning during a battalion formation aboard Camp Pendleton, California, according to Marine Corps officials.

The Marines were arrested for allegations related to “various illegal activities” from human smuggling to drugs, the Marine Corps said in a press release.

Maj. Kendra Motz, a Marine spokeswoman, told Marine Corps Times that the Marines questioned and arrested by NCIS ranged in rank from private first class to corporal and hailed from 1st Battalion, 5th Marines.

Another eight Marines were questioned about their involvement in unrelated drug offenses, according to the press release. The Corps said that none of the Marines questioned or detained Thursday have been supporting military operations at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“1st Marine Division is committed to justice and the rule of law, and we will continue to fully cooperate with NCIS on this matter,” the Marine Corps said in the release.

Florida deputies say three minors are safe after a high-speed chase for a burglary suspect ended in a crash in Jackson County Wednesday.

Deputies say the man drove off when they initially tried to talk to him following a burglary nearby. A chase ensued before he lost control of his car and crashed near the intersection of Dogwood Drive and Old Greenwood Road, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies took the man into custody.

According to deputies, a 17-year-old girl crawled out of the car and a 2-year-old child was found standing in the backseat. Deputies also found a 3-year-old child who had been thrown from the car into the grass.

The children were all “miraculously” unharmed, deputies say.

The sheriff’s office says they didn’t know three minors were in the car during the chase or else they would have not allowed it to continue.

Deputies identified the suspect as Domingo Morales Hamilton Fernando as the suspect. He is in critical condition.

Deputies say the man is wanted for being in the country illegally, according to the Department of Homeland Security. He is also wanted in connection to human trafficking and smuggling.

The leader of a Mexico-based church that claims over 1 million followers worldwide was ordered on Thursday to remain held on $90 million bail, nearly double the original bail, on newly expanded charges of rape, human trafficking and child pornography.

The ruling virtually assures that Naason Joaquin Garcia, 51, the head and self-styled apostle of the Guadalajara-based evangelical church La Luz del Mundo (Light of the World), will remain in custody as he awaits trial.

The decision to raise Garcia’s bond from $50 million came four months after the original charges against him were ordered dismissed by an appeals court on grounds that Garcia was denied his right to a speedy preliminary hearing in the high-profile case. He has remained incarcerated during subsequent legal proceedings.

Last Thursday the California attorney general’s office filed a new criminal complaint charging Garcia and two co-defendants with 36 felony offenses, 10 more than they previously faced, including additional rape counts.

No pleas have been entered to the newly filed case. Garcia and the others have maintained their innocence, as has the church in a statement released after the latest charges were brought.

Garcia is also the subject of a U.S. federal investigation, three people with knowledge of the matter, two of whom are in law enforcement, told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

According to prosecutors, five victims, some of them minors, have made statements to investigators that they were raped or otherwise sexually abused by Garcia. Prosecutors have also cited an “orgy” video in which Garcia is seen watching while a young boy has sex with a member of his own family.

Prosecutors at the two-day bond hearing said the exceptionally high bail sought for Garcia reflected concerns that he would flee to Mexico using church funds.

Patricia Fusco, supervising deputy for the attorney general’s office, told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge George Lomeli that Garcia was believed to have had $500,000 cash in U.S. currency, as well as thousands of euros and bars of gold stashed at his residence.

While bail for Garcia was increased, Lomeli lowered bond for an accused accomplice, Alondra Ocampo, from $25 million to $10 million. A third defendant in the case, Susana Medina Oaxaca, remained free on bail, while a fourth, Azalea Rangel Melendez, was still at large.
